Parliamentary Library training

Our solution

Using some of our existing communications training modules as a basis, we developed two customised workshops for the Parliamentary Library team.

The first workshop, Techniques for Effective Communication, presented a flexible approach to designing and planning that could be applied to many different communications scenarios – from writing copy for the Web to presenting a Ministerial Briefing. It also presented a 'tool kit' of different communication techniques for participants to use and adapt in the workplace. These techniques were specifically selected for their relevance to the work undertaken by the Parliamentary Library team.

The second workshop, Effective Communication in Practice, applied many of the techniques of Workshop 1 to specific, on-the-job case studies selected by the client. Participants were able to workshop their ideas in small groups and gain important feedback and suggestions from their peers.

Topics covered in the workshops included:

  • Steps in the communications process
  • Planning effective communications
  • Tone & register (formal, standard, informal)
  • Styles (persuasion, instruction, journalistic)
  • Techniques (keywords, summaries, anecdote, example, visual aids, using interaction)
  • Using visual material
  • Presenting verbally
  • Presenting complex information
